Part of HC3’s mandate is to help universities play a bigger and better role in social and behavior change communication (SBCC) at the local level. An HC3 2013 university needs assessment indicated that while many universities in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia require SBCC students to complete some kind of practicum experience as part of their degree programs, the nature of those applied learning opportunities is often ad hoc.
Practice opportunities are not always well-integrated into the curriculum nor do they always directly address the needs of the communities where the applied learning takes place.
This webinar, the second in our University Initiatives series, will focus on how universities can strengthen their links to the community by working with faculty to incorporate service learning activities into their coursework, facilitating mentoring for university students placed in health communication/health education projects and organizing student internship programs with government health agencies.
We will showcase three different approaches to community engagement:
- Community-Based Education program at Jimma University in Ethiopia
- The ACE (Advancing Communication Experientially) Fellows program in the Tanzania Communication Capacity Project
- SOURCE (the Student Outreach Resource Center) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health
Please join us on Nov. 25 at 9 AM EST.
