New HC3-supported Entertainment-Education Drama Addresses Family Planning, Malaria

The Health Communication Capacity Collaborative is among several partners proudly supporting Newman Street, a new Nigerian entertainment-education program premiering Oct. 16 and featuring well-known faces from “Nollywood” as well as some newcomers.

Newman Street is an innovative television drama, creatively scripted and acted to address key health concerns facing all Nigerians, like malaria and family planning. The characters are captivating with compelling stories.

For example, Andy, a handsome barber and aspiring Afro-hip-hop artist, and Mama Ejiro, who sews clothes in front of her house, are both trying to reach their very different dreams of fame and fortune. The premiere takes place in Lagos the evening of Oct. 16 at the Silverbird Galleria in Victoria Island.

Newman Street will be broadcast to television viewers beginning Sunday Oct. 19.

In addition to HC3, Newman Street is funded by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (JHU·CCP); the Nigerian Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (NURHI) funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; the Nigerian National Malaria Programme (SuNMaP) funded by UK Department for International Development; and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
